Bergamot Cake

by Emily Rinkema

The waiter interrupts their argument to tell them that the dessert special is Bergamot Cake. In his defense, it was likely unclear that they were arguing. They’ve been together long enough that they can fight without raising their voices, without showing pain, without speaking.

They nod at the waiter, smile at him and thank him for telling them the special. Calvin says they need a minute to think about it. Louise knows they’re not going to get dessert, especially a dessert with bergamot in it, since neither of them know what bergamot is. And they never order dessert at restaurants.

But Calvin says, 'I think we should split the cake.'

It’s sharp and fast and unexpected. Louise twists her napkin. Calvin slides the salt shaker back and forth in front of him.

'Good,' Louise says. 'I love bergamot.' She moves the pepper shaker in front of her and caresses it with her fingernail. 'It’s my favorite,' she adds.

'That’s why I suggested it,' Calvin says, eyes meeting his wife’s for the first time since their entrees were delivered.' He smiles, and it’s hard for her not to flinch.

The waiter returns and Louise tells him they would love to try the dessert. 'We’ll share it,' she says.

'Extra bergamot, please,' Calvin says.

The cake arrives. The waiter sets it in between them and gives each a spoon. They clutch them like pistols.
